Exploring Suan Luang (King Rama IX Park): A Local’s Perspective in Phuket

Phuket is widely recognized for its stunning beaches and bustling nightlife, but beyond these well-trodden paths lie serene green spaces where locals gather for recreation and relaxation. One such hidden gem is Suan Luang, also known as King Rama IX Park, located on the west side of Phuket Town. Although it may not be as convenient for my usual morning or evening walks, I decided to explore this expansive park on a beautiful, clear morning last week.

First Impressions of Suan Luang
Having driven past the park numerous times, I was aware of its existence but had no idea about its vastness. The main entrance on Chao Fa Road, which heads out of Phuket Town towards Chalong, invites you into a sprawling green space that continues to reveal new paths and areas even after half an hour of walking. Suan Luang is a popular gathering spot for locals, especially in the mornings and evenings when the weather is cool enough for outdoor activities like walking, jogging, and cycling.

Activities and Atmosphere
As soon as I entered the park, I was greeted by a large lake, a beautiful centerpiece that adds to the park’s charm. Turning left or right from the entrance offers different experiences. Heading left leads you to another smaller lake filled with vibrant lotus flowers and a network of paths that twist and turn through the lush greenery. It’s easy to get pleasantly lost among the trees, with joggers passing by and older folks enjoying their morning air.

The park is a hive of activity. Even at 8 AM, a football match was in full swing, and badminton players were energetically hitting shuttlecocks back and forth. It’s a lively yet peaceful environment, with many older people engaging in light exercise and leisurely walks. I had read that Tai Chi is a common morning activity here, and although I didn’t see large gatherings, a few individuals had found their own peaceful spots to practice.

A Walk Amongst Nature
Suan Luang is not just a place for exercise; it’s also a haven for plant enthusiasts. I discovered several greenhouses within the park where various plants are carefully tended. Outside these greenhouses, Leelawadee trees (Frangipani) filled the air with their sweet fragrance, enhancing the park’s sensory appeal. The well-maintained paths and the abundance of greenery make it an ideal spot for a morning walk, a break from the daily grind, or a quick detour on the way to work.

A Local’s Haven
One of the most striking aspects of Suan Luang is its distinctly local atmosphere. The people I encountered seemed like true Phuket residents, not tourists or even individuals from other parts of Thailand. There was a sense of community, with familiar faces and friendly interactions. A couple of park-goers seemed a bit surprised to see a foreigner in their midst, reinforcing the park’s status as a local retreat rather than a tourist hotspot.

Hidden Gems in Phuket
Suan Luang, like Bang Wad Reservoir, Saphan Hin, and Monkey Hill, is one of those lesser-known places in Phuket where locals gather. These green spaces are scattered throughout the town, providing walking paths, scenic views, and a breath of fresh air away from the island’s more commercial areas. They offer a glimpse into the everyday life of Phuket residents and a chance to experience the island’s natural beauty from a different perspective.

Conclusion
Visiting Suan Luang (King Rama IX Park) was a refreshing experience, highlighting the often-overlooked green spaces that Phuket has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a place to exercise, relax, or simply enjoy nature, Suan Luang provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots. Its local charm and natural beauty make it a perfect spot for a morning walk or a leisurely exploration. If you find yourself in Phuket, take some time to visit Suan Luang and discover another side of this beautiful island. You might just see me there on one of my morning walks, enjoying the tranquility and the vibrant local life.
