  • Description

Ao Sane is a hidden gem on Phuket’s southwest coast, known for its rocky terrain, excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities, and tranquil atmosphere. This 200-metre-long beach is lined with trees providing shade throughout the day, while ample sandy areas cater to sun lovers. The beach attracts regular visitors during the high season and has a small community feel, thanks to its rudimentary bungalows and a local restaurant.

How to Get to Ao Sane
To reach Ao Sane, start at Nai Harn Beach and follow the road under The Nai Harn, a 5-star hotel located at the northern end of the beach. Drive through the hotel grounds and over the hill to a small parking lot with a road leading down to Ao Sane Beach. While you can drive down, the steep hill makes the return trip challenging, so most visitors opt to park at the top and walk down.

Facilities and Amenities
Shade and Space: The beach offers plenty of shaded areas under the trees and enough sandy space for those who prefer the sun.
Basic Facilities: There are no sun loungers, bodyboards, jet skis, or kayaks for hire, and no wandering vendors. However, you will find a shower and toilet halfway along the beach, near the restaurant.
Dining: The beach restaurant provides good, affordable cuisine with a laid-back, international bohemian vibe. It’s open from breakfast until late evening.
Activities
Snorkelling and Diving: Ao Sane is a fantastic spot for snorkelling and diving. The underwater life is abundant and varied. Bring your own mask and fins, as there are none for hire on the beach. For snorkelling, head to the easternmost end of the beach (towards Nai Harn) where there’s a channel through the rocks.
Relaxation: The beach is perfect for those looking to relax without the usual beach sports like volleyball or football. Early risers often secure the prime shady spots.
Accommodation
Nearby Hotels:The Nai Harn: A 5-star hotel located nearby.
Sabana Resort: Another nearby option.
Mangosteen Resort & Spa: Located a bit further inland.
Baan Krating Resort: The closest accommodation, a 3-star hotel about 500 metres west of the beach, accessible via a track through the trees.
Unique Features
Seclusion and Natural Beauty: Ao Sane Beach offers a unique, rugged charm with its rocky terrain and natural beauty. It’s an excellent spot to enjoy a peaceful, uncrowded beach experience.
Beach Bungalows and Dive Shop: The beach has a few bungalows and “Armin’s Dive Shop,” where you can rent snorkelling gear or take a diving lesson for 950 baht.

Final Tips
Transportation: Remember that parking space is limited, so arrive early if you’re driving.
Preparation: Bring your own snorkelling equipment and a towel for sunbathing.
Dining Options: For more dining options, head to nearby Nai Harn, where you can find everything from convenience store snacks to fine dining at The Nai Harn hotel.
Ao Sane Beach offers a tranquil escape with excellent snorkelling and diving, perfect for those looking to experience one of Phuket’s less crowded and more natural beach environments.

To reach the place use a bike and after go down to the beach. Access is easier on the left side.Despite the ongoing constructions of the new Baan Krating, the beach is not so frequented; shady gross sand with some big rocks here and there; snorkelling is decent, with some nice underwater places about 3 - 8 meters of dept, with plenty marine life. There are some corals bleached but still largely worth it for Phuket.

Ao sane used to be our favourite beach to visit when we lived in Phuket. Now it is like a building site. The small shack restaurant is gone as is the small shack diving shop. Replaced by 3 large buildings in construction, possibly hotels or residences. The place has been effectively ruined

Whilst there is construction work going on just behind the beach, the snorkeling here is great, particularly out to the right following the line of rocks. I saw many colourful tropical fish and there's no current so very safe. Not too many people come here as it's a bit more remote and there's not much space for parking. If you're coming, best to use a motorcyle, there is a small amount of parking at the top of the earth path leading down to the beach. Regarding facilities, a guy has set up with a cold chest selling cans of soda for 30 Baht and there's a small cabin serving hot snacks. If you can ignore the construction then it's a very good place to snorkel.

Update July 2024: Severe coral bleaching (30+ %) 😱😭 Ao Sane beach was on Google maps but disappeared as a place you could rate? All the old reviews gone? Ok, let's start again: This beach WAS one of the best places to snorkel in Phuket. But too many people were walking on the coral, touching and removing starfish, corals etc. Later, the hydrofoil surfer crowd made it unsafe to snorkel and dive (sharp edges, driving full speed to the beach as per video, unsafe and inconsiderate, dangerous), taking up all the space from other beachgoers. And lately, they demolished the restaurant and started to build a resort. Instead of protecting the place, it was ruined. What a pity. Edit: it's a bit better now, the hydrofoil bullies haven't been there for some days now 👍

Nice quiet beach (except for the construction) with large rocks and clear waters. Great for snorkelling and just chilling. The road is narrow and parking is impossible for cars. Best to come via motorbike and park on the top of the hill. There are steps leading down to the beach. Do bring along your own food and water as there are no facilities or sale of anything. Bring your trash with you when you leave.
